The first junior high track meet of the season kicked off Thursday, March 1st. Van Horn hosted the meet at their track and field.
"Jordan won 2nd and 5th in discus and shotput. Isabel did not place." Coach Flippen explains.
Jordan Miller and Isabel Guillory are the only two track participants this year. Both girls are seventh graders who have always wanted to run track and do field events.
Jordan Miller competed in the discus and shotput. Coach Flippen says,"...she placed second in the discus with a 48ft 10 inch throw. She then placed fifth with her 20ft 11 inch throw in the shot put.
"I think we both did really good for our first track meet. I also think that we will continue to get better with each track meet going on to the district meet." Jordan states.
Isabel Guillory competed in the long jump and the 100-meter dash. Unfortunately, Isabel did did not place in either event. According to Isabel, she gave it all her might.
"It was really cool because, other than this year, I haven't done sports before. It was also nice to see all of my old Van Horn friends again." Isabel comments.
Jordan says that she is really excited about this track season. "I think I have potential in the discus and shot put. I want to work hard to try and work up to a good placing at district. I bet that with some hard work and a lot of practice, Issy and I will do good at the district meet in a few weeks."
The next Junior High track meet will be in Alpine on March 22 after spring break. The district meet will then be on April 5th in Van Horn. Both girls plan to participate in each meet. The number of meets was limited due to state testing dates.
