Valentine High School junior, Evan Means, recently received a letter from the President of the United States, Donald Trump. Evan decided to write a letter to President Trump in mid-January for the simple reason of informing him of the life of the people of West Texas.
“I decided to write a letter to President Trump because I feel as though many people are unaware of our unique situation. Because we are so small and rural in Valentine, we are often overlooked in many ways”, says Evan.
She added, “In my letter, I explained where we were located, the population of our town, but mostly, I tried to focus on the high school itself. I wanted to portray Valentine in a way that could potentially open the eyes of the people of our government, so I figured, why not go straight to the top, right?”
It took Mr. Trump around three weeks to respond to Miss Means’ letter, but when the response came, “it was well worth the wait,” she added.
Evan commented, “I sent the letter with, in many ways, a low expectation; however, when I received the letter in the mail, I was extremely excited. It was really neat to see something from the desk of the President addressed to me on my kitchen table.”
“I have always had an interest in government and how it affects the people, so I am sure I will end up writing another letter to the President, now that I know I can get a reply. In the future, I would like to ask him about things that are specific to his opinion, that have the ability to spark interest in people my age.”
By taking a chance and writing a letter to the President of the United States, Evan Means, from Valentine, Texas was able to receive a response. Her experience goes to show that you never know what will happen unless you try something new and take a chance.
