Alert! Alert! The flu is affecting the West Texas including Valentine ISD. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 53 kids have died from the flu outbreak and so far 48 states have been affected by the flu.

Cheryl Owen, nurse at Culberson County Hospital says, “The flu is still at a high level and has not reached its peak yet. Even people who got the flu vaccine still got the flu because the vaccine isn't as strong as it used to be.”

Cheryl also said that, “It will take a couple of weeks for you to come down with the symptoms and if you don’t know if you have the flu make sure you wash your hands that way you don’t cause the spread of the flu to the other people around you.”

Flu shots are still available for purchase. If taken, mthe flu wont be as hard on you if you were to get the symptoms. “As of now 40% have reported the flu in Culberson County and it is worse for the kids and seniors.”

It has been busy for the hospital and the clinic during this flu season. Over the flu season Culberson County Hospital and the Culberson County Clinic have seen about 420 people with symptoms of the flu.

“The cases of Pneumonia the hospital has seen is mostly in the elderly people they get the flu. The flu lowers the ability for them to combat something else so the pneumonia is a second case for them and we have seen about 20 to 25 of those patients.”

There you have it. Don’t wait to get your flu shot at the last minute. It’s not too late.
