Good Game for JH, But No Win
by Lonnie Flippen -
The Junior High Lady Pirates did not have the answer for one of the Sierra Blanca Lady Vaqueros who scored 18 points in the Vaquero's win over the Pirates by a score of 31-14, but if that one young lady had been ill or turned an ankle or had not made the trip, the young Pirates might have beaten the talented Lady Vaqueros by a score of 14-12. With all of those "what if's" out of the way, the Pirates played what may be their best game of the year. The Pirates were only down by 5 points going into the fourth quarter but failed to score while giving up 12 points.
The visiting Vaqueros pressed the Pirates the entire game and the Pirates found ways to beat the press but missed a number of shots that would have made the score a good deal closer. Overall, the Lady Pirates played very well and were much improved over some of their previous games.
Mickie Siddiq led the Pirates with her seven points. Mickie had numerous rebounds and was all over the floor. Sixth grader, Fabiola Urias added five points and seventh grader, Jordan Miller had two points before leaving the game with a reoccurring knee injury. Bela Oldham, Isabel Guillory, and Claudia Figueroa played well defensively and had to stay on the floor with no substitutions for most of the game.
The Lady Pirates travel to Balmorhea on Monday, January 15th to take on the district-leading Balmorhea Bears. They will close out the season travelling to Marfa and then hosting the Lady Indians from Fort Davis as well as hosting the district tournament in early February.
