Coach Lonnie Flippen, a name we all know and love… however, to many, Coach Flippen is a mystery. So, to shed a little bit of light on who he really is, we spoke to him on a deeper, more personal level, to talk about HIM… instead of sports.
Coach Flippen has a bachelor’s degree in History with a minor in Physical Education, a Master’s degree in Education and also History. He has been teaching for thirty- nine years in schools all over Texas; this is his fifth year to be in Valentine.
“Before I taught, I drove a truck… which would make you want to be a teacher! Almost all I’ve done all my life was teach or drive trucks; however, I don’t think that there was ever a time in my life that I didn’t know I wanted to work with children, and so whenever I got the opportunity, I jumped at it,” says Coach Flippen.
As far as Coach Flippen’s “track record” goes (pun very highly intended), his list of experience is extensive. He was in Balmorhea for one year, Fort Davis for eight, Star, Texas for one, Whitney (a 3A school) for two years, Morgan for eight, Aquilla for two years, Oglesby for one, and Walnut Springs for ten years.
He added, “My first introduction to history was going through Fort Davis when I was just a seven or eight year old kid, and I could just see in my mind’s eye the soldiers and the indians. I think that’s where my love for history developed, and it has never died; I live to study history, and now I’m part of it!”
There you have it, the story of the man behind Valentine’s history and athletics program! From all of us at Valentine ISD, thank you Coach, you are greatly appreciated among all your students.
