Ms. Brownfield is a face that everyone knows and is always quick to help out anyone who needs it. However, we talked to Ms. Brownfield so that all could know more about the woman who teaches a wide range of grades at Valentine ISD.
Ms. Brownfield said, “My degree is in Political Science with a minor in Women’s Studies, and I got that degree at the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque, and when I moved back to Texas I went to Sul Ross and that is where I got my teaching degree. This is my seventeenth year to teach… I started late!”
“I first started teaching in Van Horn, then I went to Fort Hancock, Monahans. Before I taught I was a secretary, even though I really didn’t want to be. I knew that I needed to get an education; so somehow it worked out that my mom needed someone to go to Albuquerque to take care of her mother and sister, and that allowed me to take care of them for half the day and the other half I could go to school,” said Ms. Brownfield.
“What I really wanted to do was be a licensed professional counselor. I have always wanted to be able to counsel people, especially children; what I really wanted to specialize in was children of divorce, and be able to help them through that.”
She added, “Because both of my parents were teachers, teaching was never something that I really thought that I would do, especially when I was young. However, whenever I went back to college, I had a few professors that really made me want to teach.”
“Each year, I don’t care how old you are, you learn something, and each year I tell my students that I learn as much from them as they hopefully do from me.”
